TOOL 1 The «Yes, and…» Technique
Instead of starting with «No» or «But,» validate the other person first. This builds a bridge before you present your counter-argument.
- Direct: «That is impossible.»
- Diplomatic: «I hear what you’re saying; however, looking at our current resources, that might be a significant challenge.»
TOOL 2 The Modal Verb Shield
Using words like could, would, or might transforms a command into a collaborative suggestion. It gives the other person «room to breathe.»
- Direct: «Send me the report by 5 PM.»
- Diplomatic: «Would you be able to send over the report by the end of the day?»
TOOL 3 The «I’m Afraid» Strategy
In Spanish, «Me temo que…» can sound overly dramatic. In English, «I’m afraid» is a standard professional tool used to deliver bad news or a disagreement politely and calmly.
- Example: «I’m afraid I have to disagree with you on that point, and here is why…»
